Gig Workers and AI’s New Frontier

Are we training humanoids to outshine us, or are we just making strange bedfellows?

The gig workers who are training humanoid robots at home have become a key part of the robotics industry. Zeus, a medical student in Nigeria, straps his iPhone to his forehead and records himself doing chores, helping to train these humanoids. Micro1 has hired thousands of such data recorders across 50 countries, but raises questions about privacy and consent.

Meanwhile, AI benchmarks are being rethought. Angela Aristidou proposes new approaches that assess AI over longer periods in real-world scenarios, rather than isolated problems as is common now.

In other tech news, a quantum computer competition awaits its winner, and OpenAI has secured the largest funding round in Silicon Valley history. However, concerns remain about how tech giants are using user data. A robotaxi outage in China left passengers stranded, while Russia's internet faces new outages. A satellite-smashing chain reaction looms as a space threat.
