Eric Carle Museum Staff Vote on Union

Are workplace woes finally spurring a union push at the caterpillar’s namesake museum?

Employees at the Massachusetts Eric Carle Museum, home to works by beloved children's book author and illustrator Eric Carle, have announced their intention to unionize. In a statement on Instagram, staff cited poor working conditions and under-staffing as key reasons for seeking representation from the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2110.

The museum, established in November 2002 by Carle and his wife Barbara, has seen more than a million visitors since its opening. However, recent allegations of understaffing and lack of promotion opportunities have led to this move towards unionization.

In their petition with the National Labor Relations Board, museum workers emphasized the need for a fair and open election process, aiming for as many eligible staff members as possible to participate in the vote. The post reads: 'We call upon Museum leadership not to interfere with or delay a union vote.'

This development comes amid a broader trend of museum staff seeking better working conditions and equitable treatment. As cultural institutions continue to face financial pressures, the push for unionization at the Eric Carle Museum highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining a balance between historical significance and modern workforce needs.
