Wispr Buys Its Way Into Meetings

AI dictation’s new frontier: meetings, not just memos.

Wispr, once a household name in AI transcription, has now raised $280 million to expand its horizons. The funds will see the company diversify beyond traditional dictation tools into more interactive spaces like meetings. With a valuation of $2 billion, Wispr is looking to revolutionize note-taking, aiming for error rates below 10%. Amid growing competition from rivals like Willow and Granola, Wispr's new tool Canto promises improved accuracy.

The influx of investors, including newbies Acrew and Forerunner, underscores the company’s renewed focus on quality over quantity. Since its last funding round, Wispr has been busy expanding in regions such as India and the U.K., while also partnering with tech devices like the Oasis ring to enable hands-free dictation.

In a bid to innovate further, Wispr has launched Interface Labs under Ariya Rastrow, previously of Amazon Alexa fame. This new lab aims to explore novel ways of human-computer interaction beyond current tools like note-takers and summarizers. It’s all about making the invisible, visible—literally, in some cases.

As Wispr steps up its game, it faces stiff competition from lower-priced alternatives. But with cutting-edge technology and a robust investor base, it seems well-placed to dominate this growing market. Can Canto truly cut errors down to size?
