Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider has hinted at a plan that could transform how we interact online. The company has applied to ICANN to make “.bsky” an official domain suffix, giving users the opportunity to craft cleaner, more user-friendly web addresses. For instance, @sarahp.bsky.social could simply become “sarahp.bsky.” This move could lead to the creation of comprehensive personal pages, enhancing users’ online presence. However, the application process is still in its early stages, with ICANN planning to publish the applications on October 7, 2026, and the completion of the process taking 18 to 24 months.
Bluesky has confirmed that it has no plans to sell or monetize the domains, stating that this decision aligns with its belief in an open web where users control their online identity. Rose Wang, Bluesky’s COO, emphasized that domains are a fundamental part of the open web, allowing users to maintain control over their online presence. Such a move could empower individuals, but only time will tell if this vision becomes a reality.
The application process is not without its challenges. The approval and implementation phases could face delays or unforeseen issues, and there remains the question of how .bsky domains will be requested, registered, or distributed. Despite these uncertainties, Bluesky’s commitment to user control over their online identity is a promising step towards a more open and democratic internet.
