OpenAI has introduced a new feature to ChatGPT that allows users to lock their conversations with a four-digit PIN or biometric authentication. This addition aims to safeguard sensitive discussions, especially when sharing devices with friends or family.
Unlike temporary chats, which are session-specific and not recorded in chat history, locked chats can be revisited at any time. The feature is designed for personal moments and surprises, ensuring that discussions remain private even when handing over the device.
Once a chat is locked, it moves to a dedicated section, separate from regular chat history and pinned conversations. Memory in these chats is stored separately, meaning new information doesn’t spill into regular conversations. However, it’s important to note that locking a chat doesn’t provide end-to-end encryption or alter how long the app retains the chat data.
Users can reset their PIN, which will permanently delete all locked chats and associated content, but this feature isn’t available for certain types of chats, such as temporary or group chats. The feature is rolling out now, so it might not be available to all users immediately.
