A hack at Anodot has left over a dozen companies with sensitive data in limbo, facing potential extortion from the ShinyHunters group.
The breach began on April 4 when Anodot's data connectors stopped working, preventing customers from accessing their cloud-stored information. Hackers stole authentication tokens used by these customers to enter their data, allowing them to amass reams of company information.
One affected company is Rockstar Games, creators of Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne. A spokesperson stated that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed but insisted the incident had no impact on operations or players.
The ShinyHunters are known for their social engineering skills, targeting companies with large cloud data storage to steal passwords and tokens. Snowflake, one such cloud storage provider, cut off Anodot customers after detecting unusual activity in some data stores.
For now, the extent of the damage is unclear, but it serves as a stark reminder for businesses to enhance their cybersecurity measures.
