The European Commission's new open-source age-verification app has been revealed to have significant security issues. Security consultant Paul Moore claimed he could breach the system in under two minutes, citing vulnerabilities such as user-created PINs that could be easily exploited.
Despite President Ursula von der Leyen’s assertion that this app would eliminate excuses for failing to check users' ages, these findings highlight a concerning lack of cybersecurity. The app stores sensitive information and fails basic security protocols, leaving it open to exploitation by hackers.
This revelation comes amid a series of other high-profile data breaches and security failures in the tech industry. Basic-Fit confirmed a major data breach affecting millions of customers' financial details. Meanwhile, global hotel booking giant Booking.com disclosed suspicious activity that may have compromised customer data including names, emails, and phone numbers.
The incident with Bluesky also saw a DDoS attack compromise its site and app, causing intermittent failures in feeds and notifications. This series of events raises questions about the overall security standards in tech companies and their preparedness against cyber threats.
