In February, workers from a Kenyan company contracted to annotate data for Ray-Ban Meta reported viewing intimate footage captured by the smart glasses. Less than two months later, Meta terminated its contract with the firm.
The Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten, along with freelance journalist Naipanoi Lepapa, first broke the story of Sama workers complaining about seeing explicit footage shot from Ray-Ban Metas. According to a report by BBC, Meta ended its contract with Sama over these complaints.
Sama claims that 1,108 workers were affected by this cancellation and argues that they never received any notification regarding failing to meet the company’s standards. In their statement, Sama stated: 'We do not comment on specific client processes or decisions, however, we can confirm that the engagement with Meta is ending.' They also added: 'Our focus is on supporting our employees during this transition while continuing to deliver for our clients.'
A Meta spokesperson told BBC that they decided to end their work with Sama as they do not meet the company's standards. Ars Technica reached out to both Meta and Sama, but received no further comment.
