We’ve all grown accustomed to the notch, that unsightly slice of reality on our smartphones. But now, thanks to metalens technology from Boston-based Metalenz, Face ID could go invisible.
Metalenz’s metasurfaces are a slimmer, single-lens alternative to traditional multi-lens systems, offering better security and less space usage. Their latest innovation, Polar ID, captures unique polarization data that helps differentiate between real faces and 3D masks, making it more secure than Google's Face Unlock.
At Display Week, Metalenz showcased how Polar ID could seamlessly work under an OLED display, with the camera hidden from sight. While image quality may suffer slightly, the system still functions effectively, proving its worth in continuous displays and beyond.
But don’t expect seamless integration just yet. The company is currently in talks with major manufacturers to refine this technology for mass production, which could see it on devices by 2028. Expect a smoother user experience without compromising security – or revealing any secrets you might be hiding behind your face.
