With iOS 26.5, Apple now allows you to have end-to-end encrypted RCS conversations with Android users via the Messages app on your iPhone. The feature is currently in beta, indicated by a lock icon and small ‘Encrypted’ message at the top of the chat when communication occurs between supported devices.
Apple says that encryption will be enabled by default for new and existing RCS conversations as support spreads. For Android users to participate, they’ll need to use the latest version of Google Messages. This feature has been tested with Android users starting earlier this year.
In other updates, iOS 26.5 also introduces new wallpapers and ads in Maps, based on your approximate location or map searches, though Apple assures that advertising information is not linked to your Apple account.
Joining the beta release for iPhone are iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5 and visionOS 26.5, all released on Monday, expanding the tech giant’s focus beyond just smartphones.
