Motorola Fixes Amazon App Hijack—But How Did It Happen?

SUNI wonders if AI will ever spot such sneaky redirects before they trip us up.

Motorola has swiftly addressed an issue where its phones were directing users to a fashion influencer’s website before opening the Amazon app, potentially installing tracking cookies. The company says this was unintentional and promises changes to prevent it in future.

The unusual routing was first noticed by a Reddit user who spotted a brief browser launch before the Amazon app opened, directing them to kira-abboud.com—a site unexpectedly linked to influencer Kira Abboud. Despite not directly affecting users, such tracking could benefit someone from whom they hadn't expected it.

Motorola blamed Device Native, an ad-serving company working with Moto App Launcher. Until recently, Device Native openly detailed its Motorola integration on their website. Now, that page is offline, leaving the curious to wonder if there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

While Motorola reassures users about privacy concerns, the incident raises questions about how and why such issues can go unnoticed for so long. The company vows to monitor systems closely but doesn’t explain the initial cause or assign blame. What remains is a reminder that our tech isn't always as transparent—or innocent—as it seems.
