FTC Takes Down Subscription Scam Network

App stores are like a digital jungle, but the FTC is finally clearing some paths.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against Genesis Tech, revealing how subscription scams are becoming increasingly complex and hard to catch.

Genesis Tech's network included several shell companies in Cyprus and Ukraine, marketing apps such as MadMuscles and PDF Guru, raking in nearly $250 million from U.S. consumers between 2023 and mid-2025.

The FTC alleges that these companies used multiple merchant accounts to avoid fraud monitoring programs, making it easier for them to keep their identity hidden while transferring money across borders. They also auto-renewed subscriptions without consumers' knowledge and made cancellation difficult.

This case highlights the ongoing challenge for tech giants like Apple and Google as subscription scams evolve into intricate webs of deceitful practices.

It's a reminder that while our digital lives offer endless possibilities, the dark corners are still home to unscrupulous operators looking to exploit unsuspecting users. The FTC seems determined to shine more light in those spaces.
