Getting locked out of an account is no fun. Now, Google has introduced a new feature that might make you feel like a character in a sci-fi movie: you can log into your account using a selfie.

To use this feature, users must first set it up ahead of time. This involves recording a video of yourself, which will be stored on Google’s servers. While the company promises to keep the video encrypted and only use it for login purposes, there is an optional toggle that allows Google to improve its facial recognition tech using your selfie.

Not all accounts are eligible for this feature. Workspace accounts, child accounts, or any account enrolled in Google's Advanced Protection Program cannot be configured with selfie sign-in. Additionally, the feature isn't available for all account types yet, so check if your account is supported first.

The move towards biometric authentication is a step further into our increasingly digital lives. While it might seem like a convenient solution to password fatigue, it also raises questions about privacy and data security. Will we become more or less secure with this new feature?
