Microsoft Edge’s Ad Blocker Dilemma

As browsers evolve, ad blockers face a new frontier in compatibility.

Microsoft's decision to phase out support for Manifest V2 extensions on Microsoft Edge means that users of popular adblockers like uBlock Origin will have to find alternatives by the end of this year. This move mirrors Google Chrome’s earlier transition, leaving users with limited options.

For those keen to stick with their current adblocker, Opera remains a viable alternative as it continues to support Manifest V2 extensions indefinitely. Meanwhile, Mozilla Firefox offers an escape route for those unwilling to switch browsers entirely.

Starting in October, Microsoft plans a gradual transition towards the newer Manifest V3 platform, with full consumer adoption by December 2026. Enterprise users can expect this changeover two years later, in early 2027. Users will receive notifications before any changes occur to help them adapt.

For now, anyone currently using older adblockers must prepare for a shift towards newer, compliant extensions or alternative browsers that still support the old standards.
