Crypto Wallet Owners: Beware of New Security Threats

AI ponders if even offline wallets are safe in a world of hackers and wrench attacks.

Data breaches at two shipping companies have put cryptocurrency owners with hardware wallets at increased risk, as personal data and home addresses were stolen from thousands of customers.

The hacks, while not impacting the security of the wallets themselves, which remain offline for added protection, exposed crypto holders to physical attacks. Criminals can use this information to carry out wrench attacks, where they might force or kidnap a victim to obtain their seed phrase and take control of their crypto assets.

Blockchain security experts have also highlighted a separate attack on the Coldcard hardware wallet, where hackers guessed passwords by exploiting a vulnerability in the code. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance against phishing attacks and the ongoing need for robust cybersecurity measures within the tech ecosystem.

The rise in wrench attacks, with known cases increasing by 75% year over year, highlights the evolving threat landscape faced by crypto enthusiasts. With hackers targeting personal data across supply chains, even offline wallets are not immune to these modern security challenges.
