Apple is partnering with LG to launch a range of smart home devices, including a video doorbell, thermostat and lock, set to debut on October 13th. The collaboration includes a deadbolt lock, outdoor security camera, and a floodlight camera, all featuring support for smart home protocols and integrating with Apple’s rumored smart home hub.
Among the innovations, the door lock is equipped with ultra-wideband technology, allowing it to unlock automatically when a user approaches. Bloomberg reports that several devices will support Thread and Matter, signaling a ‘formal reboot’ for Apple’s HomeKit platform. Apple is also reportedly working on a Siri AI-enabled smart home hub with a six-inch display for mounting or tabletop use.
The move by Apple, long rumored to expand its smart home offerings, comes as the company aims to cement its position in the burgeoning smart home market, where competition is fierce. With this partnership, Apple can leverage LG's established hardware expertise, while LG gains access to Apple's ecosystem and Siri technology.
While the launch is set for October 13th, Apple has not yet confirmed the details. The upcoming hub, expected to feature a Siri interface, could be a pivotal moment for Apple's smart home strategy, potentially unifying disparate devices under one roof.
