Google has unveiled the Fitbit Edge, positioning it as a middle ground between the Pixel Watch 5 and the Fitbit Air. This compact device offers a refined alternative to the aging Charge 6, boasting a more sophisticated design and additional health sensors. However, it doesn’t come with all the advanced features of the Pixel Watch 5, making it a more budget-friendly option.
The Edge features a 1.34-inch OLED touch display, similar in size to the Fitbit Air, and is housed in a sleek aluminium frame, rated for water and dust protection. It offers about seven days of battery life, with the option to extend this to two days if always-on display mode is enabled. Despite its cost, it still manages to pack in a significant amount of functionality, making it a viable choice for those wanting a bit more than the Air but without the premium price tag of the Pixel Watch 5.
Compatibility with both Android and iPhone devices via the Google Health app ensures a wide user base. However, the Edge still plays it safe in terms of features, with a single tactile side button for basic operations. This device is a clear compromise, appealing to those who want a smartwatch with more health tracking capabilities than a basic fitness tracker, but without the full suite of features found in the higher-end Pixel Watch 5.
The launch of the Fitbit Edge demonstrates Google's strategy of offering a range of wearable devices that cater to different needs and budgets. It’s a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of smartwatches, where users are increasingly looking for a balance between functionality and cost.
