Earlier this year, Mercedes’ AMG performance brand raised eyebrows with the GT four-door coupe, a 1,150 horsepower electric marvel. Now, the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV takes the stage, promising to outmatch even the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric and Lucid Gravity. The GT SUV marks the first ground-up electric SUV from AMG, built on Merc’s high-performance AMG.EA architecture, combining sports-car handling with full-size practicality.
Available in three trims—GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63—the top model delivers 1,153 horsepower via three axial flux motors. Its 800-volt architecture supports charging speeds of up to 710kW, allowing drivers to charge 10–80 percent in just 12 minutes. The 128kWh battery offers an estimated range of 435 miles, while the 600kW charging speed sets it apart from Porsche's 320kW.
Despite its size, the GT SUV weighs in at a surprisingly light 5,941lbs, making it comparable to the Lotus Eletre R, Lucid Gravity, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric. It features a unique suspension system with active hydraulic elements, eliminating pitch and roll during acceleration, braking, and cornering. The interior is packed with AI features, including the MB.OS platform and the Predictive Performance Manager, which uses track-mapping data to optimize power output.
For the performance enthusiast, this isn't just a car—it’s a technological leap that redefines what a full-size SUV can be. The AMG GT SUV is set to hit the US next summer, promising a blend of power, efficiency, and luxury that could revolutionize the electric SUV market.
