SwitchBot has launched a more sustainable version of their beloved button-pressing robot. The SwitchBot Bot Rechargeable is essentially the same as the original, except with a rechargeable battery instead of disposable ones.
The new model comes at a slightly higher price point, retailing for $33.99 compared to $29.99 for the old version, but it’s argued that this makes it more economical in the long run. Replacing batteries on the original version can be tricky due to the less common 3V CR2 battery type.
The rechargeable bot is easy to install and use. It sticks to a button or rocker switch with a small arm that extends and retracts, pressing as needed. The battery access panel remains the same, but instead of inserting a fresh battery, you can now connect it via USB-C for charging. This addition makes the device slightly bulkier and less portable.
However, there’s a downside to this eco-friendly upgrade: while the original version is estimated to last up to 600 days when used twice daily, the rechargeable bot lasts only six months with just one press per day. This highlights the trade-off between convenience and longevity in smart home devices.
