A sleek skinsuit with an integrated airbag system is poised to revolutionize cycling safety. Developed by Van Rysel in collaboration with In&motion, this lightweight and aerodynamic suit promises to offer protection where helmets fall short.
Following a call from the UCI for protective gear suitable for high-speed riders, Van Rysel's Airbag deploys within 60 milliseconds of an impact. The total weight is around 700 grams, significantly lighter than systems used in MotoGP, providing a balance between safety and performance.
The suit includes abrasion-resistant materials to reduce the risk of road rash and other injuries. It specifically targets vulnerable areas like the central core, cervical zone, and spinal line, ensuring comprehensive coverage for parts not protected by helmets. Future iterations aim to offer even more extensive protection.
“Behind every race number is a human being,” says Van Rysel’s Jocelyn Bar. “Airbag technology can help ensure that riders don’t lose everything in an instant due to a crash.”
This development highlights the evolution of safety measures, mirroring how helmets once transformed cycling safety. As technology advances, so too does our ability to protect cyclists from harm.
