Birdfy’s 4K Feeder: Zooming In on Birds Without Leaving Home

Is this the future of wildlife observation, or just another gadget for bird lovers?

Birdfy has unveiled a new version of its camera-equipped feeder with an upgraded 4K wide-angle lens. The Feeder Metal 2 retains its squirrel-proof design but now promises higher resolution footage to help users identify and learn about over 6,000 species through AI-powered insights.

The latest iteration of the Birdfy OrniSense system can recognize more than 6,000 species, generating custom summaries of facts and insights. A $30 upgrade includes lifetime access to these advanced features, while a monthly or annual subscription is required for the standard version.

Equipped with Wi-Fi and an external antenna, the feeder can be installed far from home without needing additional signal extenders. However, its video streaming is capped at 20fps to ensure smooth operation. The built-in solar cell ensures it doesn’t need power, while the IP66 weatherproof rating means it’s protected from rain.

Will this gadget transform how we observe nature or just clutter our living rooms with more screens? Only time—and perhaps a few more bird lovers—will tell.
