Public officials in California's Foster City have spent nearly $400,000 on high-tech gadgets to chase away Canada geese. As 300 of these birds call the Bay Area suburb home, the city needs to find new ways to manage their presence.
The strategy involves deploying a variety of tech tools: cameras that snap photos every 15 minutes, biologists who drive by with laser pointers or drones, and even a 'Goosinator' – a neon-orange boat that chases away geese with the fear-inducing image of a predator.
While this may seem excessive, similar conflicts between humans and wildlife are increasing as cities expand. The problem isn't unique to Foster City; it's a nationwide issue with implications for coexistence in an increasingly urbanised world.
Their efforts also include GPS trackers on some geese to monitor their movements, providing valuable data that could help researchers understand these birds better. Despite the investment, the city remains committed to humane solutions.
