According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple's iOS 27 update will introduce an 'Extensions' feature allowing users to choose which AI chatbot they want Siri to work with. This means third-party chatbots such as Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude can now fetch replies for Siri, similar to how the voice assistant currently works with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The new system will give users more control over their choice of chatbot on their iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple is also reportedly planning a standalone app for its AI-upgraded version of Siri, which can take actions across apps based on user commands.
Following several setbacks, Apple revealed in January that it’s working with Google to power its overhauled Siri. The Information reported this week that the deal also includes the ability for Apple to use Gemini to train smaller AI models.
This move towards third-party integration could signify a shift towards more diverse and personalized AI experiences on Apple devices, as users can select chatbots that align with their preferences or needs.
Apple is expected to reveal the newest versions of its operating systems during its Worldwide Developers Conference set to kick off on June 8th. The event will likely provide further insights into these new features and how they integrate seamlessly across Apple’s ecosystem.
