The Best Indoor Security Cameras
From TP-Link to Blink and beyond, here’s how to keep an eye on your space without breaking the bank.
While indoor security cameras are a cheap and easy way to check in when you're away from home, they come with privacy risks. There are legitimate reasons to want one, such as added peace of mind or monitoring children or pets. But inviting a camera into your home is a big step, so make sure everyone in the home is aware and on board.
I’ve been testing security cameras for over a decade now, and I have a handle on what to look for. The affordable TP-Link Tapo C120 ($36) is my top pick for most people, but you’ll find some alternatives below. Be sure to check out our many other guides, including the Best Outdoor Security Cameras, Best Baby Monitors, and Best Video Doorbell Cameras.
Many security cameras support local storage, enabling you to record videos on the camera or a linked hub. A few hubs have built-in storage, and some provide slots for hard drives, but most rely on microSD cards. Here are some details on what to look for, and a few recommendations. (Check out our buying guide to the Best MicroSD Cards for more.)
The microSD card you choose should have fast read and write speeds so that you can record high-quality video and play it back without delay. We recommend going for Class 10 microSD cards rated as U1 or U3. You can dive deeper into what that means in our SD card explainer. Before buying, check the card type, format, and maximum supported card size for your security camera. Consider how many hours of video each card capacity can store.
