Former Tesla executive and Heron Power CEO, Drew Baglino, has quietly entered the heat pump market with his newly founded startup, Sadi Thermal Machines. This marks his second venture since leaving Tesla in April 2024, following the success of Heron Power.
Sadi’s name nods to pioneering physicist Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot, reflecting Baglino's expertise and passion for thermodynamics. The startup shares a headquarters with Heron Power and employs several Tesla alumni, hinting at the transfer of valuable Tesla knowledge into new ventures.
Baglino’s experience at Tesla was pivotal in developing their advanced thermal management systems. He was instrumental in creating the octovalve system used in the Model Y, which integrates cabin heating, battery cooling, and motor temperature control. This multi-functional approach to heat pumps suggests Baglino aims to revolutionise residential HVAC and water heating.
During a 2022 earnings call, Baglino expressed interest in developing a home-based heat pump, stating, “Way harder in a vehicle.” His departure from Tesla and entry into the consumer market indicate a shift towards practical applications that benefit everyday people. Only time will tell if his new venture succeeds where Tesla’s did not.
