Plug-in hybrid powertrains were designed to be the best of both worlds – a combustion engine for long trips and an electric motor for daily commuting. However, it’s often assumed that drivers never plug in their vehicles, missing out on the benefits of electric driving.
A new study from Toyota Research Institute North America reveals encouraging data: more than 6,000 RAV4 Prime and Lexus NX 450h+ owners are indeed plugging in regularly. This challenges the notion that PHEVs are merely a marketing ploy, with drivers not taking full advantage of their electric capabilities.
The research, based on anonymized data from 2021 to 2024 models, shows that many PHEV owners are using their vehicles’ electric motors for daily commutes. This means that while they may still use petrol for longer trips, the battery is often charged through regular home or workplace charging.
This result suggests that incentives and marketing strategies have successfully persuaded drivers to embrace electric driving more than initially thought. It also hints at a broader trend towards hybrid vehicles being used in a way that maximizes both efficiency and convenience.
