Waymo has launched its newest robotaxi in Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco. Dubbed the Ojai, this all-electric minivan aims to reduce costs and accommodate thousands of riders.
The vehicle, based on the Zeekr architecture, is a modified Chinese-made van equipped with cutting-edge technology from Waymo’s sixth-generation system. It features 13 cameras, four lidar sensors and six radar units. While its launch comes amid challenges for Waymo, including service suspensions in several cities for safety reasons, the Ojai offers a potential path to increased scale and revenue.
Designed with accessibility and user comfort in mind, the Ojai boasts features such as charging ports, cup holders, large screens and easy entry/exit points. Its modular design allows it to be easily adapted for future vehicle types, including the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5. The goal is to increase the company’s fleet capacity from around 3,700 Jaguar I-Paces to tens of thousands annually.
The Ojai represents a significant step in Waymo's journey towards commercial viability and scalability. With its focus on cost efficiency and rider experience, it could set new standards for autonomous ride-sharing services.
