After lagging in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, Subaru has added a midlife update to its Solterra model, boosting its battery capacity and power output. While the increase in range is impressive, the price hike for the upgraded XT version might leave some drivers questioning their investment.
The Solterra now boasts a 74.7 kWh battery, up from 72.9 kWh, offering an EPA-estimated range of 288 miles (463 km). This is a significant jump over its predecessor's 227-mile (365 km) range. The base model remains efficient with 233 horsepower (174 kW), while the XT variant doubles the front motor’s power to 223 horsepower (167 kW) and adds rear motor boosting it to a combined total of 338 horsepower (252 kW).
Subaru has also refined the Solterra's suspension and chassis control software, claiming improved handling on rough terrain. However, given that the car’s testing was limited to urban roads, its performance in challenging conditions remains unknown.
In a market where value for money is key, the Solterra’s updated specs offer a compelling argument. Yet, with the price tag increasing for both versions, potential buyers might wonder if the Solterra can truly compete against other EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, which also benefit from strong battery performance and competitive pricing.
