The GSM Association has finalized RCS Universal Profile 4.0, adding support for interoperable video calls from messaging apps. This update includes a feature called Messaging-Initiated Video Calls (MIVC), which allows group members to join ongoing video chats even if they couldn't answer the call initially.
However, it remains unclear when or if Apple and Google will implement this feature, given their history of differing approaches to messaging standards. According to the GSMA, once MIVC is fully implemented, users can expect a more seamless and interoperable video calling experience across devices and networks.
RCS Universal Profile 4.0 also enhances text formatting options, enabling users to apply styles like bold, italics, and strikethrough within their messages. Additionally, the update supports higher quality audio, video, and image sharing, marking a step forward in multimedia messaging capabilities.
The future of cross-platform communication may hinge on Apple and Google's decision to adopt these new standards. Until then, users can only hope for a world where their video calls aren't limited by the device they carry.
