Apple and Google are updating their smart home streaming devices to support Thread 1.4. This move lays the groundwork for easier integration into existing Thread networks, making the process simpler than creating a new one from scratch.
The latest spec introduces standardized credential sharing, allowing devices like Apple TVs and Google TV Streamers to join established networks more easily. It’s akin to sharing a Wi-Fi password but with better interoperability across different brands.
While the implementation is promising, it looks like users might still have to wait for a fully unified Thread network. The Google TV Streamer can generate QR codes to join a network, and my Apple TV shows signs of Thread 1.4 support, yet there are no options to share credentials in current dev betas.
Other major ecosystems like Samsung and Ikea already support credential sharing, but Amazon’s smart speakers haven’t been updated yet. Once they do, we could see significant improvements in the way smart homes function together.
