Tesla is developing a purpose-built, wheelchair-accessible autonomous vehicle. A representative told lawmakers in Washington, DC, that this project aims to provide freedom of movement for those confined to wheelchairs.
The electric automaker already operates self-driving vehicles but these are not designed for wheelchair access. Musk has previously hinted at working on accessible rides and Tesla's Robotaxi app includes an accessibility tab, even if it directs users elsewhere for actual service.
While no US robotaxi company currently offers fleetwide driverless, wheelchair-accessible rides, efforts like General Motors' Cruise prototype show progress is being made. However, several firms have faced challenges, including GM halting its self-driving unit following a pedestrian collision.
The Americans With Disabilities Act requires reasonable modifications for equal transport access. Despite this, many cities rely on partnerships with specialized fleets of wheelchair-accessible vehicles to meet these requirements.
