According to a report from Bloomberg, OpenAI is poised to unveil its first major hardware device – a smart speaker that lets you converse with ChatGPT. The gadget, sans screen but equipped with a camera and sensors, aims to understand your environment. It will feature a rechargeable battery, smart home controls, media playback, question answering, and message responses.
The company initially planned for the release in 2027, though recent filings from Apple suggest tensions in tech innovation. OpenAI has dismissed these claims as unfounded. The device is expected to include GPT-Live, an enhanced voice model unveiled last week. Bloomberg also hints at mechanical elements that could mimic human-like interactions.
OpenAI’s hardware lineup is expanding with plans for five devices, including a collaboration with Jony Ive and the Codex Micro gadget from Work Louder. The smart speaker will be part of this broader strategy, launched in 2027. For now, OpenAI remains tight-lipped about its plans.
