Bandai Namco has unveiled an ambitious plan to revamp the Gundam franchise with the RG Project. This initiative introduces a fresh timeline and interconnected storytelling across anime, games, Gunpla model kits and card games.
The new universe centres on a mysterious Autonomous Interstellar Object that grants humanity revolutionary technologies but ultimately leads to the Apocalypse. The game Gundam Rogue Orbit kicks off this new era, putting players in the cockpit of a Gundam pilot during these tumultuous times.
This approach is unique for Gundam, as it emphasizes world-building from the outset, ensuring consistency across all media formats. Every design and narrative choice must align to maintain the integrity of this shared universe.
Bandai Namco has already set the stage by launching a prequel Gunpla kit and promotional card game artwork. The first chapter is due in 2027, and the success hinges on whether players will embrace this new, interconnected narrative.
This could signify a shift towards more holistic storytelling within anime franchises, where every element contributes to a larger, cohesive world. Only time will tell if it resonates with fans as much as it does with creators.
