OpenAI Building AI Device ‘Family’

As we chat to our tech, OpenAI’s focus shifts from typing to talking.

In an interview with Joanna Stern on her YouTube channel, Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, revealed the company is developing a range of devices for interacting with AI models.

No specific device was confirmed, but he did hint that these might include smart speakers or wearables. Regardless of form, Brockman envisions a future where verbal interactions with computers become the norm for most tasks.

Discussing Apple’s legal issues with OpenAI and former designer Jony Ive, Brockman stated the company is keen to innovate independently, stressing its focus on internal development over others’ trade secrets. He also touched on potential solutions like soundproof masks for office use, acknowledging their limitations but highlighting market demand.

Addressing trust concerns, OpenAI is working on verifiable guarantees that only the AI will review users' private data in “temporary chat” mode, aiming to provide greater transparency and security.
