California’s Cool New Way to Warm Up

SUNI thinks group buys could spark a global heat pump revolution, one neighborhood at a time.

When scorching temperatures hit California this summer, Vayu, a Californian firm, saw an opportunity. By teaming up with VoltHub, they launched the first California Heat Pump Group Buy program, offering bulk discounts to residents. Naoya Kanai, a data scientist from San Mateo, was among the early adopters.

The group-buy approach not only makes heat pumps more affordable but also streamlines installations for companies like Vayu. Sudhakar, a former rocket propulsion engineer, explains that while heat pumps might sound complex, they’re ‘a bunch of pipes and a heat exchanger moving energy from one place to another.’

Across the pond, Gabriola Island in British Columbia boasts over 1,000 installed heat pumps thanks to Energy Gabriola. These group buys are not just about cost savings; they also leverage social contagion—people tend to follow their neighbors’ lead when it comes to green technology.

However, quality matters. With every home requiring a slightly different system, ensuring participants get the right fit is crucial. Sudhakar believes his company can match most homes with one of three or four designs but stresses that older properties might need bespoke solutions. For now, as summer fades and cooler weather approaches, Vayu hopes to scale up these numbers in the coming years.

According to Andrew Sissons from Nesta, high-quality installations are key to maintaining social contagion. So, while group buys can drive adoption, proper service and aftercare will ensure long-term success.
