Nielsen is leveraging wearables to enhance its ability to measure viewer habits in the streaming era, announcing new features that include smart-watch like gadgets as part of its Portable People Meter (PPM) Wearables system. With these devices, Nielsen hopes to gain a clearer picture of who's watching what without requiring users to log in.
Building on earlier decisions to incorporate Device and Account Sharing (DASH) data, Nielsen is also using two additional surveys to better estimate the number of Spanish-speaking households participating. The firm believes this will make its demographic data more representative and less skewed towards older residents. Each update aims to maintain Nielsen’s position as the industry standard in ratings capture, despite the fragmented viewing habits brought on by streaming.
While these enhancements could lead to more accurate measurements, they may also raise concerns about privacy and user experience for panel participants. The push toward wearable technology might be seen as an intrusion, but if it results in better data, other firms might follow suit.
