This week, the US Army deployed a high-energy laser to target and destroy three drones near the US-Mexico border. The operation, led by the Joint Task Force Southern Border (JTF-SB), utilized the Locust Laser Weapon System, part of the High-Energy Multipurpose Laser (AMP-HEL) program. The system, capable of generating a 20-kilowatt beam, can detect, track, and damage drones from a distance. Official reports suggest the drones posed a physical threat to US military and Customs and Border Patrol partners.
The laser, mounted on a military vehicle, is designed to integrate with radar and command-and-control systems, making it a versatile tool for border security. Major General Curtis Taylor, commander of JTF-SB, stated that the operation sends a clear message against hostile surveillance by criminal networks.
