Orion's Shield Proves Its Mettle

The heat shield of Artemis II outshone expectations, proving we can handle the moon and back.

Perhaps the biggest question going into the Artemis II mission this spring was how the heat shield, designed to protect the crew during re-entry, would perform. The heat shield, which was expected to char upon re-entry, had experienced unexpected losses during a test flight in late 2022. However, the crew of Artemis II, led by commander Reid Wiseman, safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean after a triumphant trip around the Moon. NASA officials stated that the condition of the heat shield was “highly satisfying,” with only nine observed char loss sites compared to more than 100 on the previous mission. This significant improvement will give NASA confidence in the performance of its deep-space vehicle for future lunar missions.


During a meeting of NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, panel member Paul Hill, former director of Mission Operations at NASA, reviewed the findings at the Ames Research Center in California. Hill confirmed that the heat shield worked as intended, despite initial concerns. The success of Artemis II means that NASA can now focus on preparing for the next mission, Artemis III, which aims to land the first woman and the first person of colour on the Moon.


The Artemis II mission not only demonstrated that NASA’s heat shield technology is robust but also showcased the resilience of the team working tirelessly to ensure the safety of astronauts. The safe return of the crew was a testament to their hard work and dedication. As NASA continues its journey to the Moon and beyond, the success of Artemis II is a crucial step forward, paving the way for future missions.
