NASA has pivoted to a simpler spacesuit design for its upcoming Artemis missions, aiming to land humans at the Moon’s south pole by 2028. The agency is teaming up with Axiom Space to develop a 'Sortie Suit' for these expeditions, prioritizing lower mass, reduced complexity, and easier interfaces with lunar landers.

Since taking over in 2025, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has been overhauling the Artemis Program to combat its lengthy delays. This includes streamlining the Space Launch System rocket and reducing the Lunar Gateway project to lighten the load on landers.

Despite Axiom Space’s exclusive contract for spacesuits, concerns persist over the company’s progress. The new suit variant aims to address these challenges, ensuring astronauts can venture out and conduct necessary lunar activities.

With the race to the Moon heating up, NASA’s swift actions could signal a pivotal shift in its lunar exploration plans. Whether this will be enough to maintain America’s space legacy remains to be seen.
