Stoke Space Technologies is taking a bold step in the space race by securing a $1 billion investment to develop fully reusable rockets. CEO Andy Lapsa aims to scale production and flight frequency, but his real ambition is to build a rocket where both stages return to Earth, paving the way for truly low-cost access to space.
The company’s unique approach involves flowing super-cooled liquid hydrogen through thermal shielding to cool the second stage as it re-enters the atmosphere, a challenge SpaceX has struggled with. Stoke plans to launch its first vehicle, the Nova Pathfinder, in early 2027 and a larger Nova Block 2 in 2029, potentially outcompeting SpaceX.
With a focus on third-party customers, Lapsa sees a gap in the market that Stoke can fill, especially as SpaceX’s Starship could phase out the Falcon 9. Nevertheless, the race to orbit is fraught with delays and technical challenges, and Stoke’s first success would be a significant milestone.
