A new study by Aviloo shows that electric vehicle batteries are holding up better than feared, with most used EVs retaining about 90% of their original capacity after 150,000 kilometers. This is great news for drivers who were concerned about battery degradation.
Despite a surge in EV sales, long-term battery durability remains a key concern. However, the Aviloo study found that the median state of health (SoH) for 20 popular EV models was between 87% and 94% after 150,000 km, and between 91% and 97% after 50,000 km. This means that the vast majority of EVs are performing well within their warranty periods.
The study also highlighted that battery degradation can vary significantly even within the same model, depending on factors such as climate conditions, battery size and driver habits. For instance, parking in extreme heat or cold can accelerate battery decay.
According to Marcus Berger, CEO of Aviloo, 'The car might look the same—same age, same mileage—and you don’t know how it has been treated.' This means that EVs are less like traditional cars, where the age and mileage are key indicators of the vehicle’s condition.
Overall, this study reassures EV owners that their batteries are more robust than initially thought. But as with any technology, regular maintenance and good habits can extend their lifespan even further.
