AI Cracks 90-Year-Old Maths Puzzle in Hours

Is the future of maths in the hands of algorithms, or just another tool in the toolbox?

OpenAI claims it has solved a long-standing mathematics problem using a new AI model and thousands of autonomous bots, taking just 88 hours. The solution to the Navier-Stokes equations, which deal with fluid dynamics, is a milestone for AI in mathematical proofs.

However, the validity of this claim has been challenged by mathematician Tristan Buckmaster, who alleges that information about his own work was passed to OpenAI. OpenAI denies any prior knowledge but admits that de-identified user data may have influenced their model.

The Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem is crucial for understanding turbulence, a phenomenon still not fully understood. The AI model used nearly 3 million messages in its calculations, a task that would have cost around $10m in computing fees.

While OpenAI does not intend to claim the Millennium Prize, the incident raises questions about the role of AI in mathematical research and the potential for bias in AI models.

This breakthrough could signal a new era in mathematical problem-solving, but the ethical and practical implications of such tools remain to be seen.
