Following NASA’s decision to order two additional crewed missions from Boeing, the Starliner spacecraft will have a crucial role to play in future space missions. After the retirement of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, which is the sole operational spacecraft for NASA, the agency must find a new partner. NASA will also cover some of the costs to address the thruster issues and support the certification of Starliner on a new rocket. SpaceX, however, is shifting focus to its Starship, with plans to launch its Starlink satellites and a new constellation of orbital data centers. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has hinted that while they won’t retire Crew Dragon, Boeing should step up to deliver on its contract.
