Choosing the right pet DNA test can be as puzzling as deciphering your cat's meow. I put two popular kits, Wisdom Panel and Basepaws, through their paces, swabbing my two cats to extract answers hidden in their fur.

Wisdom Panel offered a comprehensive package, identifying over 70 breeds, screening for 25 traits, and even providing a genetic health consult. The results were swift and user-friendly, making it seem like my cat Clover's DNA was more exotic than her appearance.

Basepaws, on the other hand, delivered a wealth of genetic data in a more digestible form. It flagged potential health issues and provided a detailed oral health report, even suggesting ways to improve my cats' dental hygiene. However, the process was laborious, requiring multiple samplings.

Despite their differences, both tests shared some inaccuracies, like misidentifying my cats' colour and ancestry. Koko Genetics, a newer player, also entered the fray but didn't seem as robust as the big names.

While these tests offer intriguing insights, remember, they're tools, not substitutes for professional veterinary care. DNA results can be a helpful guide, but they're not destiny.
