For decades, cycling helmets were judged on their ability to withstand direct impacts. Now, the Pikio Si Oblik is leading the charge, with a safety-focused design that aims to protect against rotational forces.
The startup behind this ground-breaking helmet, Pikio, has been researching impact protection for 18 years. Their Oblik system imitates the woodpecker's headbanging technique, breaking down the helmet's foam into independent sections that can move or detach during impacts, reducing the twisting force on the brain.
While other helmet technologies like MIPS and 6D's ODS use different approaches, the Pikio Si Oblik stands out with its dual-density foam and flexible connection points, effectively managing both linear and rotational impact energy.
Despite being a relatively obscure Vancouver startup, Pikio has managed to score the highest in Virginia Tech's rigorous helmet testing, with a 4.61 rating outperforming even the previously top-ranked Canyon Deflectr by 32%. The company is offering a 30% discount on replacement helmets if they can get their hands on damaged ones to analyze their performance.
At $379, the helmet might seem expensive, but the improved safety comes at a price. However, the Pikio Si Oblik is impressively light, comfortable, and effective, making it a premium choice for those prioritizing safety over aesthetics.
