UK’s ARIA Plans to Rewire Your Brain

The future of neurotech is here, or maybe just around the corner.

The UK's Advanced Research and Innovation Agency (ARIA) has set its sights on a groundbreaking £69 million initiative aimed at developing more precise ways to modulate brain circuits. This ambitious program hopes to address everything from epilepsy to Alzheimer’s, with the ultimate goal of creating non-invasive neurotechnologies that could revolutionize treatments.

Their approach is multifaceted, ranging from using ultrasound to ‘biotype’ individual brains, to deep brain stimulation techniques designed to protect and regenerate different regions. The vision is clear: build technologies that can interface at the circuit level with unprecedented precision.

Program director Jacques Carolan spoke about the potential of these technologies during a presentation at WIRED Health in London, highlighting how they could provide new insights into brain function. One team from Imperial College London is working on combining ultrasound and gene therapy to image gene expression in real-time in neurons, potentially offering deeper understanding of neurological conditions.

ARIA’s broader goals include tackling a range of debilitating diseases using the same platform technologies that have shown promise for treating Parkinson’s disease. The hope is that these interventions can address a wide array of conditions, including depression and addiction. For Carolan, this is all about creating 'platform technologies' that can be applied to multiple issues.

Giving ARIA seven years to show societal impact by the early 2030s sounds ambitious, but as Kathleen Fisher, ARIA’s CEO, pointed out, unexpected benefits are always a possibility. Just like how Darpa-funded mRNA technology became a lifesaver during the pandemic. The real magic might be hidden in those uncharted scientific territories yet to be explored.
