Nuclear Waste, AI Teams and Mirror Life

From storing radioactive leftovers to AI’s new teamwork—and a life form that could spell the end.

Today, nuclear energy enjoys a rare bipartisan support, thanks in part to rising electricity demand. Yet, there's an old problem quietly looms: what do we do with the mountains of nuclear waste generated each year? In the US alone, 2,000 metric tons are produced annually, and finding permanent storage solutions is urgent.

Meanwhile, AI agents are forming teams to tackle complex tasks. Tools like Codex and Claude Cowork offer glimpses of this shift, hinting at a future where multi-agent productivity could transform industries. But with great power comes risk—AI networks could be as disruptive as assembly lines were for manufacturing.

The National Science Foundation once funded research into mirror bacteria, organisms whose proteins and sugars are mirror images of nature’s. The project, initially seen as an exciting scientific leap, now faces scrutiny; some scientists fear these microorganisms could trigger a global catastrophe.
