If Russia's official reports are to be believed, their northern spaceport has been targeted by drone strikes multiple times in the last few months. Despite these attempted attacks, Russia is ramping up operations at Plesetsk Cosmodrome for a new constellation of satellites akin to SpaceX’s Starlink. This network, called Rassvet, is being developed with over $1.2 billion from the Russian government and aims to provide communications infrastructure for Ukraine's military.
The first batch of 16 operational satellites was launched on March 23 but faced significant threats according to Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov. He claimed that 'serious inbound attempts' were made against the cosmodrome, yet the joint combat crews managed to complete their mission successfully.
Local authorities in Mirny, near Plesetsk, warned of a drone threat between March 22 and 25, hinting at potential disruptions to mobile internet services. While Roscosmos has acknowledged the attacks, it remains tight-lipped about any damages or impacts on operations.
The launch schedule remains under wraps as Russia seeks to protect its burgeoning space programme from cyber threats while maintaining a competitive edge in satellite deployment.
