Artemis II’s Lunar Journey in Animation

NASA’s trove of images reveals new perspectives on our nearest celestial neighbour.

The Artemis II mission astronauts have provided a rich archive of images from their journey to the Moon, but it's one animation that has truly captured the imagination.

Initially snapped by Commander Reid Wiseman as the Orion spacecraft left Earth, the ‘Hello, world’ image has now been animated by Andy Saunders. This composite reveals previously unseen details and offers a mesmerising look at the mission’s journey.

The astronauts used three cameras during their flight: a Nikon D5, a Nikon Z9, and an iPhone 17s. The variety of equipment ensured a diverse range of views from space, with some images capturing breathtaking moments that may never have been seen otherwise.

With over 12,000 images released in the latest batch, enthusiasts and researchers alike can explore every second of the mission in unprecedented detail. NASA’s Gateway to Astronaut Photography serves as a treasure trove for those interested in space exploration, offering a personal glimpse into one of humanity's most ambitious ventures.
