The estimated number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has dropped significantly as testing efforts have intensified. As of Tuesday, there were 437 reported cases, including 321 confirmed and 116 suspected.
Despite the drastic reduction, WHO representative Christian Lindmeier explained that many previously counted cases had been cleared to reveal other illnesses or unconfirmed fevers. Confirmed cases are now those who have tested positive for Ebola, while suspected ones were identified by symptoms matching the disease's initial stages.
The death toll has also decreased to 48 confirmed deaths from a previous 241 reported fatalities, including both confirmed and suspected cases. Uganda’s case count rose to 15 confirmed cases following six new infections among contacts of previously diagnosed individuals.
As the world watches this unfolding story, the importance of accurate testing cannot be overstated. Clear diagnoses may signal better containment strategies or simply reflect a more precise understanding of the outbreak's true scope.
